Participants from all over the world came to the animation workshop of Hello Wood art camp and the subsequent creative week at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest. Czech, Greek, Mexican, Lebanese, Polish, Austrian, Italian, Dutch and of course Hungarian students gathered to learn from the internationally acknowledged masters of stop motion animation. One of the goals of the workshop was to help young professionals to embrace a higher level of visual aesthetics via the stop motion technique that can be used in broad scale: in movies, TV-commercials, games and new media projects.

“We managed to organize a stop motion workshop, with students and mentors from nine countries, that is significant at an international level. It is a great honor for us that Barry JC Purves the grandmaster of puppet animation could join us again after last year, which once again raised the quality of the workshop.” – said Maxim Bakos, the director of Hello Wood and managing director of the organizer MOME line – design works. This is the third time that they organized the stop motion animation workshop which lasted from 21st July – 5th August with the support of the International Visegrád Fund. According to international trends, participants learnt how to combine traditional approaches with up-to-date digital techniques further widening the scope of the use of animation.

Among the workshop leaders was Károly Kása Papp stop motion animator, whose name may be familiar from a number of international productions and the Oscar-winning “Peter and the Wolf” animation. Zsuzsanna Szabó also contributed to the workshop who is an international expert in stop motion techniques and organizer of several workshops in Hungary and abroad. Professional puppet maker and senior technical instructor at the Bristol School of Animation at the University of West of England, Mary Murphy was in charge of creating the puppets. Lajos Polecsák from BeastArts Studios guided the digital processes and the final touches of the movies.

The first part of the animation workshop was part of the Hello Wood art camp which took place in North-Eastern Hungary and had an interdisciplinary approach: architects, designers, photographers, typographers had the opportunity to work together, exchange ideas, take part in each other’s creative processes.

Stop Motian Animation Workshop Budapest 2012 – PART 1 @ Hello Wood from mome line on Vimeo.

The animation workshop continued after the art camp at the studios of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest with guest lecturers from the international animation scene. The stop motion puppet animation films have long tradition and a special place in the history of film in Central and Eastern Europe, that is why it was important that one of the greatest Czech animators, Bedrich Glaser, showed his works at the workshop. Also Ivana Sebestová visited from the VSMU University of Bratislava, who gave a lecture on animation and a sneak peek into the making of the newest Slovakian multi-award winner puppet-animation, the “Stones”. She even let the students hold one of the puppets from the movie. The recurring guest star, the worldwide acknowledged animator Barry JC Purves honored the workshop with his presence just like last year. This year beside the lectures he held a weekend-long practical animation training for the participants that resulted in a collective art piece. The participants also had the opportunity for a studio visit, they could be part of the work of Studio Filmefex for a short time.

The aim of the two week long workshop was not only to train the animation techniques such as pixelation, time-lapse and puppet stop motion but also to create a tradition that supports international cooperation of the film industry. It formed basis for professional and cultural exchange, a platform for networking and changing ideas within the V4 and other countries as well as to sustain and develop the cultural heritage of the Central and Eastern European region. For the students it is a great opportunity to get to know the greatest of their profession and to build fruitful relationships for their future professional development.

The workshop could be realized with the support of International Visegrád Fund. Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and Studio BeasArts provided the technical support to the event.

The project Visible Data – financing culture searches possible models of structuring data in the field of financing culture, where there is usually a lower level of interest in information design and visualization. Data on economics, demographics, and finance are the most visually represented, while culture, where power relations are more sophisticated and therefore not so attractive or dramatic, is still not in the main focus of research. Visualization of information has been, in the recent past, a helpful tool for comprehending the complex nature of human society. Since this complexity is growing exponentially, demand for different kinds of mediators and agents is essential.

The Project uses examples of culture financing in Europe. Comparative research through various information visualizations of different budget items and structures provides better insight into how micro and macro culture financial policies are functioning. In the project Visible Data_financing culture, graphic designers, web designers, programmers, sociologists, culture policies researches, artists and theorists collaborate. The emphasis in the work with students is on their critical thinking and their approach to the matter of visualization, meaning that there should be an awareness of how information visualization could be manipulated and misused. The Data on financing culture is the result of retrieval output from publicly accessible sources retrieved in consultation with the respective and relevant institution sections.

Two young designers participated in the project from our side:
Ábris Gryllus is a graphic designer born in Budapest. Currently, he is studying the last grade at the Graphic Design Department of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, Hungary. He is going to graduate in 2012, meanwhile freelancing in the field of graphic and sound design. He also studied at the Willem de Koonig Academie in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Anna Bárdy is a graphic designer born in Budapest. She is currently studying for a Master’s degree at the Graphic Design Department of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, Hungary. She is a freelancer in the field of graphic design and currently works as an interns at a Budapest-based design studio.

The data was provided by Transparency International Hungary. Thank you!

Can we improve the animation technology by merging traditional animation technique with the new digital technology? How can you improve your skills in making different kinds of movements in animation? Why is it useful to be able to make movements both in real and in virtual 3D space?

Stop motion animation has a great tradition in Eastern Europe. In order to keep this heritage alive, MOME line organised the Stop Motion Animation Workshop 2011, taking place between 1 and 10 August in Budapest. The workshop was funded by the International Visegrad Fund. The venue of the workshop was the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest – popularly known as MOME – where numerous stop motion animation enthusiasts and international and Hungarian professional animators took part with the aim of improving their knowledge, skills and creativity.

Who were here? Students from V4 and neighbouring countries, with Czech, Polish, Slovak, Austrian, Croatian and Hungarian participants.

The list of the workshop instructors and lecturers:

Károly Papp Kása – stop motion animator, who have participated in various productions worldwide, for example the Oscar awarded Peter and the Wolf

Zsuzsanna Szabó – stop motion animation expert, who has held several workshops in Hungary and abroad as well

Mary Murphy – instructor at the University of Bristol, and puppet maker

Lajos Polecsák – co-worker of the BaestArts

Ivana Laucikova – came from Slovakia as a guest teacher, teaches at VSMU

Marcus Bergner – Australian film maker, teaches at FAMU

Barry JC Purves was a key guest of the event. The Oscar nominated animator had a great time during the workshop, and he is planning to return to Budapest in the near future. He spent two entire days instructing and lecturing at the workshop, giving enormous inspiration by his presence to the participants. The lectures of Barry JC Purves were open for all interested, and his several remarkable works were also screened. However, the main attraction was his Tchaikovsky film that was screened to the Hungarian audience for the first time, as the movie was still under postproduction. Moreover, the artist brought his Tchaikovsky puppet along – besides directing and animating movies, he is also a puppet maker. During the workshop Mr Purves included a one hour live animation, impressing the participants who were amazed to see the master in the midst of a real working procedure.

The workshop included studio visits, in Kibu, Filmefex and BeastArts film studios as well. Participants worked together and shared their professional experience and knowledge. By the end of the week an intense professional atmosphere was taking shape in the workshop. Our goal was to highlight the significance of the traditional stop motion technique, because different kinds of movements in animation have a great importance in CGI technology.

Last year we received great feedback from the several participants, and this year the workshop was even more successful than in 2010. According to our future plans we would like to repeat the international workshop each year, with guest lectures and practical instruction, where professionals and students from V4 countries will be able to animate and exchange their experiences, filling a gap in the current Eastern European animation scene.

The international workshop was supported by the International Visegrad Fund.

Sony Vaio sponsored the programme by offering a few notebooks for the workshop.

In June the Danube is topic so summer’s first meetup is all about the river. We gathered six projects from different areas like urban planning, environmental protection, education or public art, which draw the attention to the values and opportunities of the Danube. We also invited architect François Decoster, who will inspire us by speaking of a possible rehabilitation plan of the Seine. To match the venue to the occasion, this time we invite you to the exhibition space at A38 on the last Friday of June at 8 p.m.

Venue: A38, Petőfi bridge Buda side
Date: 24th June 2011. Friday, 8 p.m.

Presenters:

Edit Bárd – environmental education in the Danube Museum – www.dunamuzeum.hu
Miklós Tömör (Valyo) – marked urban hiking trail along the Danube – www.facebook.com/valyovalyo
Ádám Kobrizsa – Urban Space Workshop presentation – www.urbanspacews.eu
Gábor Figeczky – “Szabadság”- island rehabilitation – www.wwf.hu
Michael Aschauer – Danube Panorama Project – http://m.ash.to
François Decoster – Paris and the Seine, urban replanning- www.laucparis.com

Edit Bárd – environmental education in the Danube Museum
Reminiscences of the river tell a lot about the story of the region and the whole country, and they also help us to understand that changes happening in the river or it’s banks have a much wider spread impact than we would think. The educational program of the Danube Museum opened in 2001 in Esztergom wants to shape young people’s thoughts to give the protectable values and environmental consciousness a bigger importance.

Miklós Tömör (Valyo) – marked urban hiking trail along the Danube
The aim of the young participants in the City and River group and their Danube hiking trail is to bring people closer to the Danube by using easily accessible tools. “ We would like the city to be a link to the water, the nature; the citizens to feel like their city and their river belongs to them; for the Danube to be on the mental map of the local people. We want to overwrite the current image of the Danube bank. We want people to be able to use the Danube.”

Ádám Kobrizsa – Urban Space Workshop presentation
What can one together with 40 young adults do for the Danube in 10 days? – talk about it, get to know it, learn what the big river means to the city and make smart designs. What is the aim of an international youth exhange program? – learning together, understanding eachother’s culture and viewpoints, teamwork and good experiences. What has been made during the 10 days of the Urban Space Workshop? – new connections, mixed teams’ plans and ideas to draw attention to the Danube.

Figeczky Gábor – Freedom-island rehabilitation
It is very important to save the Freedom-island, because nowadays there are no new islands forming on the Danube. This rehabilitation project on the tributary of the Danube moves the water-conduit from the inside of the barrage under the watercourse so thus opens the barrage and lets the Danube flow in its former line. The valuable habitat created by the project will be a sandy-pebbly, slowly flowing riverarm again, where the conditions are perfect for the nature and also the watersports can be practiced and kids can learn swimming.

Michael Aschauer – Danube Panorama project
The Danube Panorama Project is an experimental approach in photographic mapping and cartography. Its vision is to produce a huge panorama of the Danube’s river sides by digitally Slit-scanning its Coastlines, resulting in a unique ‘cross section’ of Europe. The panoramic images are captured with a slit- or line-scan camera (implemented by custom software) mounted onto a moving vessel. This creates a unique representation and perspective. Additionally the material is geo-referenced via GPS, other sensors might be included in future.

François Decoster – Paris and the Seine, urban repdevelopment- www.laucparis.com
The Seine River is a structuring element of Greater Paris’ geography and metropolitan landscape. Even if the Seine has kept its natural qualities on large portions of its banks, it has also always been a main economic and industrial development corridor with the installation, down or upstream from Paris, of factories, port facilities, water treatment or power plants, riverside expressways, business districts (including La Defense)… All cities along the Seine are now trying to readdress the river with urban redevelopment projects that, if somehow coordinated, could progressively turn it from a utilitarian space into a “meta public space” at the scale of the whole metropolis, a shared space for its entire population.

The Budapest Design Meetup is here again and this time the topic is the transportation of today and the future. Four designers present us their vehicle concepts. Not only a car, but a boat, a type of community transport and even a fashion design will be shown as well. Please RSVP at the event's facebook page.

There are few areas in design where utopias and the existing practices confront each other so hard as in vehicle design. Year after year graduating students of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design represent both extremities. Some of these designers end up as vehicle designers at such companies like Mercedes. As a result of the international success, the University is about to launch vehicle design as an MA programme.

On the first Friday of May the thematic event of the 14th Budapest Design Meetup gives a selection of these: the program contains not only cars but a boat, community transport and even a fashion design as well.

Venue: KINO Cinema ( XIII., Szent István krt. 16.)
Date: 6th May 2011 Friday 7 p.m.

Presenters:

Pál Koós – Head of the Product Design Department at MOME
Viktor Tivadar Sass – product designer
László Fogarasi-Benkő – vehicle designer
Péter Kukorelli – product designer
Anett Gálvölgyi, Zsófi Kormos, Ádám Baranyi– fashion designers

Pál Koós – www.mome.hu

As a preface the Head of the Product Design Department will talk about the department’s courses and the vehicle design MA programme. He will also mention the cooperation between the University and particular car manufacturers and also the future plans of the department. There will be an exciting taster of the best student projects which have been awarded internationally several times.

Sass Tivadar Viktor - http://viktortivadarsass.blogspot.com/

Though he is working in several areas of product design, the designer, who graduated from MOME in 2007, achieves the biggest success with his vehicle designs. For this Meetup he brought the latest, Moholy-Nagy Scholarship-awarded work: an electric sightseeing minibus. This could offer alternative to the tourists and local citizens wandering around the inner city of Budapest who are now travelling by car or the public transport company’s big buses. The designer paid attention not only to the comfort but to the efficiency of space, the quick exchange of passengers and to the futuristic details.

László Fogarasi-Benkő - http://fogarasi.co/

Even Karim Rashid had a look at one of the concepts of this young vehicle designer during the icon’s visit in February. Among the dynamic sketches made by László Fogarasi-Benkő several brands can be found from Opel, Mercedes or Alfa Romeon to Ferrari. His presentation is about the all new driving experience of BMW’s Isetta eM.

Péter Kukorelli – www.kuko.hu

The romance factor of Budapest’s city park (Városliget) could reach an unbelievably high level if from now on Péter Kukorelly’s boats could be rented on the lake. Calm water surface gives the designer the chance to make a boat with friendly shapes and accessorize it with a simple candle-holder and a parasol, thus making it irresistible.

Ádám Baranyi, Anett Gálvölgyi, Zsófi Kormos - http://thehaze-thehaze.blogspot.com/

The Young Creative Chevrolet competition was announced in Hungary for the second time last year, aiming to capture the brand’s image through the creativity of multiple design areas such as visual communication, video or fashion design. A team of three young designers entered their valiant, dynamic and detailed work in the fashion category. In Hungary they won the first prize and at the European final they took the second place.

There is no entry fee for the Meetup but we kindly ask you to RSVP at the event’s facebook page:

Where we made a lots of friends from london Quatar and Saint Étienne for example. As the grahic and interior designers of the Budapest stand at MIPIM, one of the most important real estate-development expos. Besides this we have also taken a look at the market of countries hungry for creativity.

Ideally, real-estate development follows not only the rules of engineering but also has a coherent concept and applies creative design to express it. This is something that most of the major development managers know. Speaking of public space or a luxury hotel, the success of an excel sheet and a technical drawing can be doubled with a “Gesamtkunstwerk” design strategy following up and efficiently communicating the project.

This is why we are happy be requested as a partner of Studio Metropolitana to do the design, graphics and interior design for the Budapest stand at MIPIM in Cannes. As complex projects as this require the cooperation of several design areas, so the experienced team containing architect Peter Pozsar, designer Istvan Policsanyi and graphic designer Tamas Fogarasy were working on it.

The result was a sleek stand with two parts, with a dynamic graphic defining Budapest. Placed on one of the parts was iPONT’s glasses-free 3D television which played an image video of the city. The stand was opened for the exhibition by Mr. Istvan Tarlos, Lord Mayor of Budapest.

MOME line’s manager, Bakos Maxim and Peter Pozsar also visited Cannes during MIPIM not just to take part in building the stand but to do some networking with the more than 400 exhibitors and the organizations like MOME line standing behind them.

Like lab71, an architect studio from Stockholm whom Maxim met. Their designer, Marie de France told him that they could join us as a team or as co-organizers at Wood Festival 2012 representing Sweden. We did like the idea, especially because the festival is likely to be held in Helsinki, European Capital of Culture 2012 in cooperation with Finnish partners.

Peter Lan, development manager of Dohaland project showed us an urban plan that meets the requirements of the 21st century and seeks for Quatar’s new and unique architectural traditions by experimenting with the western trends. The practicability, broadness and sustainability of the project was quite tempting!

As we have seen at their stand, a much bigger area in Russia acts as the venue of rehabilitation and development for Krasnodar region. They seemed very interested in Hungarian partners to do the landscape architecture for mainly residential buildings and family houses.

The city of Saint-Étienne exhibited as an agglomeration commuity with 6 projects. As part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (with the title City of Design) they brought a 107 hectare campus area which connects the neighboring districts. In the first step they would create the public space with the park followed by the establishment of other functions (École d’Art et Design, Telecom Saint-Étienne, exhibition spaces, …etc.) which would make it the creative focal point of the metropolis. The Manufacture Plaine Achille project was explained to Peter by Philippe Gauvrit, who told him that their aim is to create a creative melting pot similar to the one MOME line is working on. The idea of cooperation also appeared, especially when it was discovered that Hungarian-born Lorand Hegyi is the current director of Saint-Étienne Museum of Modern Art.

As an architect, Peter and Mike Althorpe (London’s regional services manager at the Royal Institute of British Architects) quickly found the common voice. Mr. Althorpe was interested in Hungarian architect studios to cooperate with in organizing conferences and other programs.

Of course we did take the best out of the warm weather and the seaside sunshine, so we brought you a taste of it. The photos were taken by David Raday.

MOME line got an integrated design project, where graphic design, a space-structuring installaton and the promo-video of the event are united.

With the motto: “Strong Europe, creative Hungary” the 3rd Innovation TechShow will open at Millenáris in May 2011. Like last year, the organizer Mobility and Multimedia Cluster asked us again to redesign the visual identity of the event, make new roll-ups and brochures. Daniel Nagy will be the graphic designer to do this.

Besides all this, the planning of the roomy inner space is also our task, so architect Peter Pozsar will work on the installation which puts all the exhibitors in the right place. Meanwhile, Peter Raday, one of the MOME media design-students will make the promo-video of TechShow.

You can already see one of the logo’s color variations, and as soon as this integrated design process evolves, we will update the post.
